Microsoft leads police to child porn collector who was using OneDrive – onmsft.com

Microsoft has tipped local police of a child porn collector who was using OneDrive to store the images. Microsoft claims to have done this by using “automated technologies to detect child pornography or abusive behaviour that might harm the system, our customers, or others”, which is also stated in their terms and conditions.

Although Microsoft has done a good thing regarding the matter, it does raise the question whether or not the things you put on OneDrive are truly private. Since the system is automated, we doubt humans are able to shift through personal OneDrive accounts, however it’s entirely possible.

The man in question claims to have received the images through the Kik Messaging app, and was trying to send the illegal images through Outlook.com. The man has remained anonymous, however it has been claimed that he is in his twenties.

What do you think about this? Is it good that Microsoft is accessing user data for a safer internet? Or should people be steering clear of OneDrive now that we know Microsoft have the power to gain access to a persons private OneDrive account?
