Microsoft, or at least some “hackers” within Microsoft, has been considering developing a gaming handheld mode version of its Windows 11 UI for devices like the Steam Deck. A video posted on Twitter on Wednesday by user @_h0x0d_ seems to be from a Microsoft Hackathon project from September 2022.
The video explains a Windows Handheld Mode that would optimize Windows 11 for such devices. Windows 11 is already available on Steam Deck in place of the Steam OS, but the experience is poorly optimized for handheld devices in its current state. This Windows Handheld Mode project would aim to fix that. It should be noted that the project may or may not see the light of day.

Instead of rolling out its own Xbox gaming handheld device, as some have long been calling for, it seems Microsoft is content to spread its Xbox brand on existing hardware like the Steam Deck and Logitech Gaming Handheld. Not to mention Microsoft’s plans to introduce an Xbox mobile games store and platform as early as next year.
