Microsoft has launched this new sales and marketing effort to reach potential Chinese customers such as local governments and public institutions, since the company has had problems in the region due to pirated copies of Microsoft software being easily distributed. Microsoft even sued China’s biggest homegrown electronics retailer, Gome Electrical Appliances Holding, back in January of this year for installing pirated versions of its software. Microsoft hopes to bring the size of Microsoft China’s workforce close to how it is at Microsoft India, with over 5,800 employees. Microsoft is also working on building a large cloud computing center in Shanghai and plans on hiring around 600 employees. The company also plans on boosting Microsoft China’s research and development spending by 15 percent over the next year.
