Microsoft is working on a new update that will bring back overlay scrollbars to its Edge browser. The Edge Insider team has recently announced on Twitter that the experimental feature is now live in the Canary and Dev channels, though it’s currently not enabled by default.

“A top feature request we have been working on lately is the overlay scrollbars flag. You Insiders have asked us to bring this back, and we’re excited to share with you the work we’ve done! This is currently only available in Canary and Dev versions 94.0.987.0 and up,” the Edge Insider team explained.

If you’re an Edge Insider, you will need to follow the steps mentioned below to enable overlay scrollbars in the browser.

  1. First of all, close all instances of Microsoft Edge running on your PC.
  2. Press the Windows + R keys and paste the following command:  “%LOCALAPPDATA%\\Microsoft\\Edge SxS\\Application\\msedge.exe” –enable-features=OverlayScrollbar,OverlayScrollbarWinStyle,OverlayScrollbarWinStyleAnimation
  3. Finally, hit the Enter button to launch the browser.

Microsoft has already updated its Edge browser with various UI elements from the Windows 11 design language, such as rounded corners, transparency, and more. This new overlay scrollbar feature has been designed to provide a modern and improved scrolling experience on Windows 11 PCs. As of this writing, it’s not clear when this new functionality will be generally available in Microsoft Edge, but it could come sooner rather than later.
