Microsoft Edge Canary can now warn users before closing multiple tabs

Microsoft is testing a new feature for its Edge browser that should prevent users from accidentally closing multiple tabs. As spotted by a user in the Edge Insider forums, the feature is hidden under an experimental flag, and it must be enabled to show up in the browser settings.

Right now, if multiple tabs are currently open in Microsoft Edge and a user tries to close the browser, then the window simply closes without any warning. With this new tab management feature, however, the browser will display a pop-up warning when users try to close multiple active tabs.

For the time being, the option is only available in Microsoft Edge Canary build 89.0.739.0 or newer. To give it a try, follow the steps listed below to enable this feature:

  1. Head over to the edge://flag page search for the “Ask before closing multiple tabs” flag. Use the dropdown menu to enable it and restart the browser.
  2. Navigate to the three dots on the top right corner and go to Settings >> Appearance. Once there, you need to enable the “Ask before Closing multiple tabs” option.

Once enabled, the browser will now show the confirmation prompt while attempting to close an Edge window with two or more tabs. This prompt helps users avoid accidentally closing the browser if there are multiple tabs open simultaneously. Notably, if a user chooses to configure the Edge browser not to show the dialogue box, Microsoft Edge will immediately close the window without displaying the prompt.

As of this writing, the feature is currently available via the Microsoft Edge Insider program, and it is expected to be deployed in the Stable channel in March 2021. Have you spotted the option on your PCs? Sound off in the comments down below.
