Today at the Microsoft event in Shanghai, Microsoft announced new Surface Pro type covers. As the teaser tweets from yesterday indicated, the new Type Covers come in three colors (similar to the colors of the Surface Laptop,) are backward compatible with the Surface Pro 4, and also feature the Alcantara fabric and a precision trackpad inspired by the Surface Book.
With a total of 500dpi sub-pixel resolution and five finger multiple touch support, the trackpad on the Type Cover is being called “the best trackpad being shipped with the Surface Pro,” according to Panos Panay. There are also a full 1.3 mm of key travel between the keys on the new Type Cover, making for a more accurate typing experience than on the iPad Pro. Full features and benefits of these new Type Covers can be seen below.
- Laptop-class typing. The Surface Pro Signature Type Cover offers a laptop-class scissor mechanism to provide consistent and stable 1.3mm key travel for easier and more accurate typing than on the iPad Pro
- Best of Microsoft technology. The Surface Pro Signature Type Cover has LED backlighting, optimum key spacing for fast, fluid typing, and a large glass trackpad with improved gesture support and accuracy for precise control and navigation — giving you a premium laptop experience on the go. It is also more accurate than the MacBook and the iPad Pro. With enhanced magnetic stability, the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover clicks easily into place and lets you adjust the kickstand to virtually any angle so you can work comfortably at your desk, on a plane or at a coffee shop.
- Beautiful and personal. Wrapped in luxurious Alcantara material for an even more comfortable typing experience, the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover comes in three rich tone-on-tone colors— Platinum, Burgundy and Cobalt Blue— coordinated with the new Surface Pro, Surface Pen and Surface Arc Mouse.
You will be able to purchase the new Type covers for $160, which is a little higher than the normal $129 price on the standard Black Type Cover.
