Last month, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft announced that it is joining up with more mobile partners. Among several big names like Samsung, HTC, LG and others, two Indian OEMs Lava and Karbonn Mobiles also made it to the list. Given the popularity of the two manufacturers, this was rather expected. But, another leading mobile maker, Micromax, was surprisingly nowhere to be found.
It was rather interesting, since this past Consumer Electronics Show, held in January, Micromax had announced LabTab, a dual-boot Windows and Android running tablet. And a few weeks ago, it announced that it was working on a Windows Phone too. The company enjoys over 25% mobile market share in India and has plans to set its footprints across the globe. However, any partnership with the Indian mobile giant, which recently made Hugh Jackman its new brand ambassador, was not mentioned.
Today, Micromax co-founder Vikas Jain confirmed to The Times that the company is working on Windows Phone. He also said that the company is in talks with the Redmond-based tech giant, and will have an official announcement soon.
Recently, Microsoft offered the Windows Phone operating system to the other two Indian manufacturers — Karbonn Mobiles and Lava — without license fees. It is very likely that Microsoft will offer a similar plan to Micromax.
While Huawei and Asus have postponed their Dual-OS tablet and phone projects, Micromax confirmed that the LapTab is coming next month.
For a refresher, LapTab is a 10.1-inch tablet that sports 720P resolution screen. Powered by a 1.46 GHz dual-core Intel N2805 processor, coupled with 2 gigs of RAM, the device comes in 32GB and 64GB variants. Are you excited about it?
