Metro Exodus is getting a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade on June 18 with ray-tracing support

Metro Exodus was already a great-looking game when it was released on PC and consoles back in February 2019, but a free next-gen upgrade will make it even better thanks to improved textures and visual effects. Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition is launching first on PC today, and it will be available on Xbox Series X|S consoles next month on June 18.

If you already own the PC version of Metro Exodus on the Microsoft Store, Steam, or the Epic Games Store, you can now download Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition for free. This separate version of the game will only work on Ray Tracing capable hardware, meaning an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2060 or newer is mandatory.

For Xbox Series X|S players who already own Metro Exodus, the Enhanced Edition will be available as a free upgrade on June 18. Unlike on PC, though, developer 4A Games will use Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system instead of releasing a separate next-gen version of the game.

The Xbox One X used to be the best console to play the post-apocalyptic shooter with a stable 4K/30FPS performance, but the next-gen of Metro Exodus will run at 4K/60FPS with Ray-tracing on the Series X, and 1080p/60FPS with Ray-tracing on the Series S. Players can also expect new Field of View options, faster loading times, and platform-specific features such as spatial audio and controller latency improvements.

It’s great to see 4A Games give a significant free update to a two years old game, which also used to be available on Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC. For new players, a physical Metro Exodus Complete Edition bundle including the main game and all expansions will also be released for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles next month.
