Memo: US Space Force pauses GenAI tools like Bing Chat use due to data security concerns

The US Space Force has paused the use of web-based generative AI (GenAI) tools like Bing Chat and ChatGPT for its workforce over data security concerns, as reported by Reuters. The source says that they have gotten this information through a memo dated Sept. 29 and addressed to Guardians, the name Space Force calls its workforce.

The Space Force is one of the most technologically advanced branches of the US military. It is responsible for protecting US interests in space and ensuring the freedom of space operations.

This is a temporary ban, and the Space Force is working with other Pentagon offices to develop guidelines on how to use this technology in a “responsible and strategic manner.”

Advanced language models power GenAI tools trained on vast datasets of text and code. These tools can produce a wide range of creative textual formats, including but not limited to poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, emails, and letters.

However, there are also concerns about the potential for these tools to be used to generate malicious content, such as disinformation or propaganda. No wonder why Microsoft claimed GenAI as ‘usefully wrong.’

GenAI has the potential to revolutionize the way the Space Force operates. For instance, these tools could be employed to generate false satellite images or create disinformation campaigns.

We believe that The Space Force is right to be cautious about the use of this new technology. It is important to develop safeguards to protect sensitive data and ensure that GenAI tools are used responsibly and ethically.
