GitHub service outages continue, no official word on why

These last few weeks, GitHub has experienced multiple outages with no official word from Microsoft as to why. Over the last three days, in particular, developers have reported The GitHub outages have been so extreme that they have been unable to perform even basic programming tasks.

I would actually like to have a writeup with technical details what causes the outages in the last 90 days! @github @githubstatus #github #githubdown pic.twitter.com/qBKntxYH0D

As noted in a post by ZDNet, Mary Jo Foley details what GitHub services have been affected over the past few days.

“On April 21, a number of GitHub services were plagued by problems for at least an hour and a half. On April 22, two back-to-back outages affected numerous developers over at least a two-hour period. And today, April 23, several GitHub services are being impacted by various problems, starting around 13:20 UTC (9:20 a.m. ET) and is still ongoing as of an hour later.

Today’s outage is affecting Git Operations; API Requests; Webhooks; Issues, pull requests and projects; GitHub Actions; GitHub Packages; GitHub Pages and more. On the GitHub status site, only Git Operations is listed as having an incident; other services are labeled as ‘degraded.’”

On Twitter, GitHub Education admitted to outages in their services, particularly GitHub Classroom and education.github.com, which is “due to the current github.com outage.”

Curiously, there has been no official word from Microsoft as to the reason for the GitHub outages. With everyone at Microsoft and GitHub being forced to work from home due to COVID-19, it can be particularly hard to run a data center efficiently. Keep up-to-date with all of the issues on the GitHub status website. Stay tuned and we will update this post once Microsoft releases an official statement.
