Fortnite video game adds Unreal Engine 5 demo character as a playable skin – onmsft.com

In a bit of a surprise move, Epic Games has just added the previously unnamed character from their Unreal Engine 5 demo to the Fortnite video game as a playable skin. Move over, Shang-Chi!

The character, now officially called Windwalker Echo, has been adapted slightly to fit the general Fortnite design aesthetic but she generally looks very similar to the original design and is instantly recognizable to those who remember being impressed by the initial Unreal Engine 5 presentation.

The celebrate the character’s arrival in Fortnite, a special short film featuring Windwalker Echo called Slay has been produced by Mold3D Studio. It can be watched below.

Epic Games is also encouraging Fortnite players and Unreal developers to share images featuring Echo (or inspired by her) on socials. Those creating images in Fortnite are instructed to use the #Fortography hashtag on Twitter or the Fortography post flair on r/FortNiteBR if using Reddit while Unreal devs can now download the Windwalker Echo assets to create their own animation and share it along with the #UnrealEcho hashtag.

Windwalker Echo definitely made an impression with gamers and developers back in May 2020 when the Unreal Engine 5 presentation went live with many wondering if the character could appear in her own video game sometime in the future. Her addition to Fortnite and this social media campaign are definitely curious and it’ll be interesting to see if this is the beginning of a bigger push for the character with a larger project planned for down the road.

The addition of Windwalker Echo isn’t the only big Fortnite news this week. The finale event for the end of Chapter 2 Season 7 is scheduled to begin in just a few days’ time at 4 PM ET on September 12th with Season 8 expected to begin a few hours afterwards.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 will bring a new Battle Pass to the game along with a significant amount of new lore involving the aliens and, if the leaks are true, the return of the mysterious cube from past seasons.
