Elon Musk plans to reveal details about a major semiconductor initiative next week as Tesla looks for ways to secure its own chip supply and reduce the pressure caused by the global demand for advanced processors. The company depends heavily on custom silicon for its vehicles and AI systems, and Musk believes building a large scale chip manufacturing project will help Tesla control production while also strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in the United States.
Tesla has discussed the idea of running its own fabrication network before, and Musk now says the effort will move forward very soon. The project carries the name TeraFab and aims to produce an extremely large number of chips every year if Tesla manages to bring the concept into real production.
According to Musk’s recent post on X, the project announcement is coming quickly.
Tesla’s goal for massive chip output
Musk has previously explained that the TeraFab plan targets production of around 100 billion to 200 billion chips per year, which would place the facility among the largest chip manufacturing operations in the world if the plan succeeds.
He also suggested an unconventional approach to manufacturing that avoids the traditional cleanroom structure normally required for semiconductor production.
Possible partnerships with existing chipmakers
Industry observers expect Tesla to work with established chip companies rather than build the entire system alone. One idea involves Tesla funding new production lines while companies such as Intel or TSMC provide manufacturing expertise and technology licenses.
The semiconductor shortage and growing AI demand continue to push companies to secure long term chip supply. Tesla’s TeraFab plan shows how aggressively technology companies now approach semiconductor independence.
