As you might expect, The Game Awards is an annual end-of-year event focused on giving recognition and accolades to the best of the year in gaming. Awards will be given out in various categories (see the full list of categories and nominees here) such as Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and so on. But the biggest prize is Game of the Year honors, for which six games are nominated this year, as seen below.
Game of the Year nominees
- A Plague Tale: Requiem (Asobo Studio/Focus Entertainment)
- Elden Ring (FromSoftware/Bandai Namco)
- God of War Ragnarök (Sony Santa Monica/SIE)
- Horizon Forbidden West (Guerrilla Games/SIE)
- Stray (BlueTwelve Studio/Annapurna)
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Monolith Soft/Nintendo)
While shining a spotlight on the best the games industry gave us this year is all well and good, the real draw for many will be the torrent of game announcements that will be revealed throughout the event. An impressive 30-40 game announcements are reportedly on the slate. Expected among them are news on: Tekken 8, Baldur’s Gate 3, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Diablo 4 and many, many more.
The main event will be preceded by a 30 minute pre-show called “The Opening Act.” However, the show will be a little shorter this year at around 2 1/2 hours, compared to last year’s nearly 4-hour event. And to make things more interesting Valve will be giving away over 100 Steam Decks during the show. See the link to find out how to get a chance to win one.
