Google is working on a new “Projects panel” in Chrome that brings tab groups and AI conversations into one place. New Chromium changes reveal that the panel will list Gemini chats and AI Mode threads, so users can reopen them quickly.
The Projects panel is a new interface Chrome is developing to organize browsing sessions. It groups related tabs and surfaces items connected to ongoing work inside a dedicated panel.

The panel includes a section called “Recent chats & threads.” From here, users can open conversations created in Gemini or Chrome’s AI Mode.
Chrome checks whether the conversation already exists in an open browser tab. If the tab exists, Chrome switches to it. If no tab exists, Chrome opens the thread in a new tab.
Chrome also adds a three-dot menu next to the “Recent chats & threads” header in the Projects panel. This menu links to Gemini app activity and AI Mode activity, where users can review their conversation history.
Code comments state that this menu is temporary. Google plans to introduce controls directly on each thread later, which may allow actions such as removing individual conversations from the panel.
Other code changes reveal that Chrome records actions such as opening AI threads, opening tab groups, and creating new tab groups from the panel. These metrics track actions such as opening AI threads, opening tab groups, and creating new tab groups from the panel.
The Projects panel is still under development and currently sits behind an experimental flag in Chrome Canary. Google is also testing different variations of the feature, including versions that show AI threads and versions that display only tab groups.
