For many gamers the Xbox Series X has proved an elusive item to find. Restocks pop up here and there, only to see supplies get scooped up as soon as they appear.

The ongoing pandemic is largely to thank for this situation, creating a heightened demand for home entertainment devices while at the same time creating the conditions that have lead to a component shortage for such devices (such as the semiconductor chip famine).

One option which gamers hankering for the latest gaming hardware might consider is buying a refurbished Series X directly from Microsoft. While some may be loathe to buy refurbished, it presents a viable option if you can’t find one anywhere else.

But it is worth emphasizing the point that if you want to go this route, it’s best to buy directly from the source and avoid places like eBay. Buying a Series X from Microsoft eliminates much of the risk in buying from the second-hand market, as these units undergo professional quality tests and repairs. They also come with 12 month warranties, and extended warranties are also available with the Microsoft Complete program. Refurbished unites usually come at a discount – normally around 5 or 6%. It should be noted that the U.S. Microsoft Store requires you to buy a bundle with a game and controller. Similar deals are available for the Series S as well, for those interested in that console.

It’s been nearly a year and a half since the most powerful Xbox in existence was unleashed on world. If you haven’t been able to find one and are tired of the wait, buying a refurbished unit might just be your best bet.
