Apple has introduced the AirPods Max 2, the first major upgrade to its premium over-ear headphones since the original model launched in 2020. The new version keeps the same recognizable design with large aluminum earcups and a mesh headband, but Apple focused heavily on internal improvements.
The biggest change comes from the H2 chip, which brings stronger noise cancellation, better sound processing, and a range of intelligent listening features. Apple says the updated model reduces outside noise up to 1.5 times more effectively than the previous generation, making long listening sessions quieter and more immersive.
According to Apple’s official announcement, the AirPods Max 2 will open for pre-orders on March 25 and will begin shipping in early April. The company also confirmed that the headphones keep the same $549 starting price. Apple positions the new model as a feature-rich upgrade that now includes many capabilities already available on newer AirPods products, while keeping the familiar over-ear design that users recognize.
What’s New in AirPods Max 2
The H2 chip plays a central role in this update. Apple paired it with improved audio algorithms and a new amplifier to deliver clearer sound and more precise spatial audio. At the same time, the updated processing improves active noise cancellation and transparency performance so users hear their environment more naturally when needed.
- Up to 1.5x stronger Active Noise Cancellation for better isolation in loud places such as airplanes or trains.
- New high dynamic range amplifier that improves clarity and detail in music.
- Adaptive Audio that automatically balances transparency and noise cancellation depending on surroundings.
- Conversation Awareness that lowers music volume when users start speaking.
- Live Translation that works with an iPhone to translate speech between languages.
- Voice Isolation that focuses on the user’s voice during calls.
Improved Sound and Lossless Support
Apple also upgraded the internal audio system to improve spatial audio performance and overall sound clarity. The company added a new amplifier designed to deliver cleaner output across bass, mids, and highs. When users connect the headphones with the included USB-C cable, AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio for high-fidelity listening across music, movies, and games.
Design and Colors
The overall design remains unchanged from the previous model, which means users still get the aluminum earcups and breathable mesh headband that define the AirPods Max lineup. Apple will sell the new headphones in five colors.
- Midnight
- Starlight
- Orange
- Purple
- Blue
