Facebook Messenger for Windows is shutting down on March 3

Facebook is shutting down its Facebook Messenger client for Windows. The social juggernaut has recently started to notify users that the service will become inaccessible come March 3rd. The news comes after Joe Belfiore, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Manager of Windows Phone, announced that the Messenger client will be arriving on Windows Phone “within weeks”.

“We’re sorry, but we can no longer support Facebook Messenger for Windows, and it will stop working on March 3, 2014,” the notification reads. “We really appreciate you using Messenger to reach your friends, and we want to make sure you know that you can keep chatting and view all your messages on http://www.facebook.com. Learn more.”

Facebook Messenger for Windows is shutting down on March 3

The sad demise of the service comes two years after Facebook launched the Messenger on the Windows platform. But does it surprise us? Not really. This past week Facebook bought the rights to the most popular instant messaging service, WhatsApp. Facebook knows that more people use mobile phones, and hence its recent activities hint at a roadmap in mobile networks.

In a statement to AllFacebook, a Facebook spokesperson said, “Yes, we are notifying people who use Facebook Messenger for Windows that it will no longer be available as of March 3”. So what’s the reaction of our readers who are using this app?

Thanks for the tip, Anon!
