Windows 10 is on its way, and according to Dell, some of its customers who have been testing the Windows 10 Technical Preview have been impressed with what they saw, claiming that the new OS from Microsoft bridges some of the gaps present in Windows 8.1.
Niel Hand, vice president of tablets, said in an interview with ComputerWorld that one of the biggest new additions to Windows 10 is its ability to scale software and apps across multiple device form factors with more ease than is already possible on Windows 8.1. Although, Hand did note that Microsoft was heading in the right direction with Windows 8 as it prepared customers for mobile.
“That to me … was the real message with Windows 8 transition. Start moving towards a super-scalable environment. [Microsoft] was ahead of the curve in that implementation, but Windows 10 has an opportunity to implement that much better. How that’s going to translate and what the customer adoption is, is what we’re trying to figure out,” Hand said.
Moving forward, Hand visualizes a future where the different ecosystems from the 3 competing software giants will become less of a concern to customers as the cloud becomes more prominent in the storage of data and hosting applications. Focus should then turn on securing cloud data and apps rather than which proprietary programming language is used to write them. Dell is already investing in technology that does just that with its Wyse subsidiary.
While Dell is still in the early stages of testing Microsoft’s upcoming flagship operating system, the company will likely have the OS installed on the majority of its range of personal computers ranging from Desktops, AIO, tablets and with Hand’s emphasis on phone scalability, maybe smartphones too.
