Cricket Wireless, an AT&T subsidiary, has finally launched the budget-friendly Lumia 640 in the US, making it the first carrier in the region to sell the handset. T-Mobile is also expected to announce the handset in the coming days, but the coming soon page is already up on the Magenta carrier’s website.
Cricket Wireless announced earlier today that the Lumia 640 will be available from participating Cricket Wireless stores and online for just $129.99 — that’s dirt cheap if you’re looking for a decent Windows Phone handset.
“Savvy consumers want value, affordability and simplicity – in addition to all the bells and whistles – and that’s what Cricket delivers,” said Andy Smoak, head of devices for Cricket Wireless. “From day one, our mission has been to redefine what people expect from a no-contract carrier and we’re delivering. We were first to offer unlimited U.S. long distance . . . first to give unlimited text and picture messaging . . . first to provide unlimited music . . . and now we’re first to bring the Microsoft Lumia 640 to the U.S.”
Customers will also get a free one-year subscription of Microsoft Office 365 Personal which give them the ability to install Microsoft’s productivity Office suite on their PCs or Mac, and have all their documents sync across devices. Furthermore, users also get 60 minutes of free Skype calling as well as 1TB of OneDrive storage to save your documents and other media files so you can easily access them from any device.
As a quick recap, the budget-friendly offering comes with a 5-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, an 8MP camera and ships with Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box.
