Phil Harrison

The rumors were correct, Phil Harrison is leaving Microsoft for pastures new.

Following a period of speculation, Redmond has confirmed that Harrison, previously the Corporate Vice President of Xbox in Europe, has made the decision to step down and pursue business interests outside of Microsoft.

The Head of the Xbox division, Phil Spencer, was quick to praise his former colleague on Twitter, saying,

Great time working together @MrPhilHarrison and good luck on the next chapter. You are a true professional.

— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) April 17, 2015

Spencer also issued a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, where he went on to say,

“I want to thank Phil for his creativity and leadership over the past three years. Phil is a great friend of mine and I wish him the very best with his future endeavours”

Harrison also issued a comment to GamesIndustry.biz, saying,

“I have enjoyed the last three years at Microsoft enormously and it has been a privilege to lead and work along side the incredible talent within Microsoft Studios in Europe, including Rare, Lionhead, Lift, Soho and Press Play.”

No details have yet emerged for what Harrison plans next, or who Microsoft has in store to replace him in his former role. There appears to have been no animosity behind the decision to leave, and as such this is no indication of tension behind the scenes.

Whoever will replace Harrison will have a key role in shaping the business strategy of Xbox One in a key market. During his time with Microsoft and working at the helm of Xbox, he has been a part of a number of highly significant decisions that have helped shape the marketing of the product.

Who do you think Microsoft should hire to replace Phil Harrison as Corporate Vice President of Xbox in Europe? Let us know in the comments below.
