Confirmed: No 3D Blu-Ray support for Xbox One on day one – onmsft.com

Bluray 3d

We already know that when we receive our Xbox Ones on 22 November, they are going to need to be updated. But this is not the only thing that day one users will have to consider. If you have a collection of 3D Blu-Ray discs, you are not going to be able to watch them on your console — at least for the time being.

While anyone who chooses to buy a PlayStation 4 on the 15th of the month will be able to enjoy 3D Blu-Rays in all their 3D glory, early adopters of the Xbox One will have to wait a little longer. It’s not something that is going to be addressed by the day one update, and there is no suggested date for when support will be added.

Talking to CNET, a Microsoft representative confirmed that out of the box the Xbox One is not able to play 3D Blu-Rays, and stated that the company hadn’t ruled out adding support at some point in the future.

While this is a fairly non-committal statement, it does mean that all is not lost. Adding 3D Blu-Ray support should — at least in theory — be a simple software patch, so it would be surprising if it didn’t appear at some point in the future. But at the same time, 3D Blu-Ray is far from being the most popular format out there, so there may not be too many people who are all that disappointed.
