PlayStation has introduced a new community initiative called The Playerbase, which gives fans a chance to appear inside its games, starting with Gran Turismo 7, and the idea is simple as it sounds since selected players will have their real-world likeness scanned and turned into an in-game character portrait for a limited-time appearance.
PlayStation shared the details in an official blog post, where it explained that the program aims to bring fans closer to its gaming worlds while also celebrating long-time players who have stayed connected to the brand over the years.
How the Playerbase program works
Players can apply through PlayStation’s official website by signing in with their account and answering questions about their gaming history, their connection to PlayStation, and their experience with titles like Gran Turismo, and after that the company will shortlist applicants for video interviews before selecting a final participant.
The chosen fan will travel to Los Angeles, where PlayStation will handle travel and accommodation, and take part in a full scanning session at a visual arts studio to create their in-game appearance, while also working with designers to build a custom logo and a unique vehicle livery that will remain in the game’s showcase menu.
The program opens up a rare opportunity for players to step inside a PlayStation game in a direct and personal way, and the company has already confirmed plans to expand this concept to more PlayStation Studios titles in the future, which suggests this could go beyond Gran Turismo 7.
At the same time, the initiative raises questions around how player likeness data will be handled and what long-term usage rights PlayStation may retain, since the current details focus more on the experience and less on ownership or protection terms.
PlayStation positions The Playerbase as a way to thank its community, and for fans who want to see themselves inside a game, the offer delivers a unique experience that few platforms have attempted at this scale.
