AMD has confirmed that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition will launch on April 22, introducing a new high-end desktop CPU built on Zen 5 with a focus on both gaming and heavy workloads. The company shared the date along with key specifications, highlighting this chip as the first Ryzen desktop processor to use dual 3D V-Cache across both compute dies.
Jack Huynh, SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics at AMD, confirmed the launch details.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 features 16 cores and 32 threads on the AM5 platform, paired with a 5.6 GHz boost clock and a 200W TDP, which makes it the most power-hungry AM5 chip so far. AMD states the processor includes up to 208MB of total on-chip cache, the highest ever in a Ryzen desktop CPU, which directly improves performance in cache-sensitive tasks.
Performance and Dual 3D V-Cache design
AMD positions the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 as more than a gaming chip, with clear gains in workstation workloads. Internal testing shows up to 7% better performance in rendering tools like V-Ray and Blender, along with 5% to 7% improvements in content creation applications. Data science workloads see up to 13% gains in SPEC Workstation tests.
Compilation workloads also improve, with up to 5% faster Chromium builds and around 8% gains in Unreal Engine compile times. These results come from the dual 3D V-Cache setup, where both compute dies carry stacked cache instead of a single CCD design used in earlier X3D chips.
