Sony has confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation is in development for PlayStation platforms, but the company does not plan to release it anytime soon, which means current PS5 Pro users will have to wait while Sony continues focusing on its ongoing PSSR rollout and game updates.
Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead system architect, shared new details about Sony’s collaboration with AMD, explaining that the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses the same core technology as AMD’s latest upscaling work, while frame generation builds on the same joint effort between both companies.
In an interview with Digital Foundry, Cerny clarified that Sony is making steady progress on frame generation, but he also confirmed that there are no additional releases planned for this year, which leaves the timeline unclear for when this feature will actually reach players.
“FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology. I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”
Frame generation still has no clear target
Cerny avoided naming a specific device, and he used the broader term “PlayStation platforms,” which suggests Sony has not locked this feature to the PS5 Pro alone, and it could arrive through a later update or even be reserved for future hardware.
He also confirmed that Sony has no more releases scheduled this year, which pushes any major update into a later window, even though the underlying technology already works on existing GPU architectures.
Right now, Sony continues to expand its upgraded PSSR across games, with titles like Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert set to receive support, showing that the company is still in the middle of improving image quality on PS5 Pro before moving to the next step.
For now, frame generation remains part of Sony’s long-term roadmap, and the company is taking a slower approach while it finishes its current upgrades and prepares for what comes next.
