OpenAI has delayed the launch of ChatGPT’s adult mode once again, extending a feature that the company first discussed months ago. The feature would allow verified adults to access more mature content inside ChatGPT, but the company now says it needs more time while it focuses on broader improvements to the AI system.
The delay comes as OpenAI works on upgrades that affect everyday users, including improvements to intelligence, personality, and personalization. The company also plans to make ChatGPT more proactive, which means the AI will take a more active role in conversations and suggestions instead of simply reacting to prompts.
According to Sources’ Alex Heath, OpenAI confirmed that the adult mode rollout has been pushed back while the company prioritizes other updates that impact a larger number of users.
“We’re pushing out the launch of adult mode so we can focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now.”
OpenAI executives say the adult mode remains part of the company’s long term plans, but the timeline has shifted. The company previously suggested the feature would arrive earlier, yet it now says the release will take more time.
A feature first promised months ago
The adult mode concept first appeared publicly in October when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the idea on X. At the time, Altman said the company planned stronger age verification systems as part of a broader principle to treat adult users differently from younger audiences.
Altman also mentioned that verified adults could eventually access erotica within ChatGPT once the system included stronger age checks.
OpenAI initially targeted December for the release, but the company later moved the expected debut to the first quarter of 2026. With that window nearly closed, there is now no confirmed timeline for when the feature will arrive. Meanwhile, OpenAI introduced an age prediction tool in January, which many expect will support the future rollout of ChatGPT’s adult mode.
