OpenAI is rolling out GPT-5.3 Instant today. OpenAI wants to make ChatGPT feel smoother in the places people actually notice. The company says this is an update to its most-used model, focused on tone, relevance, and conversational flow, with fewer awkward detours like long safety preambles, heavy disclaimers, or overly rigid refusals.
OpenAI says GPT-5.2 Instant sometimes refused questions it could safely answer, or answered with what it describes as overly cautious, preachy framing. GPT-5.3 Instant is supposed to cut that behavior down, giving a direct answer when it can, instead of leading with a lengthy explanation of what it will not do.
The company also calls out tone issues more plainly than usual. In the post, OpenAI says GPT-5.2 Instant could come off “cringe,” sometimes sounding overbearing or making assumptions about what a user feels. GPT-5.3 Instant is meant to be more focused and natural, without the unnecessary little speeches that interrupt a normal conversation.
OpenAI is also claiming better web answers, not because the model searches harder, but because it’s supposed to synthesize better. The idea is less link dumping, less grabbing random details, and more context that actually matches what the user was trying to ask.
GPT 5.3 Instant Benchmarks
This release is one of those rare “tone” updates where OpenAI still brings a few hard metrics. The company says hallucinations are down on two internal evaluations, including a higher-stakes test (medicine, law, finance) and a second test based on de-identified conversations users flagged as factual errors.
Accuracy improvements OpenAI reported (GPT-5.3 Instant vs prior models)
| Evaluation OpenAI describes | With web use | Without web use |
|---|---|---|
| Higher-stakes eval (medicine, law, finance) | 26.8% fewer hallucinations | 19.7% fewer hallucinations |
| User-feedback eval (flagged factual errors) | 22.5% fewer hallucinations | 9.6% fewer hallucinations |
GPT.3 Instant is available starting today in ChatGPT, and it’s also available in the API under the name gpt-5.3-chat-latest. OpenAI says updates to Thinking and Pro will come later.
