Microsoft re-releases August 2023 security updates for Exchange Server

Microsoft has re-released the August 2023 Security Updates (SUs) for Exchange Server, aimed at addressing a critical issue that was identified in the original release. The initial release, which took place on August 8, 2023, encountered a localization problem on Exchange Servers running non-English operating systems. This problem led to the Setup process unexpectedly halting, leaving Exchange services in a disabled state.

The updated SUs, referred to as “Aug SUv2,” have been meticulously designed to rectify this localization issue. It is imperative for those who were affected by this issue and resorted to the workaround to install the original release to take necessary actions.

To simplify the process for users, Microsoft has introduced a naming convention to differentiate between the two versions of the August 2023 SUs:

  • Aug SUv1: Original August 2023 SU (released on 8/8/2023)
  • Aug SUv2: Re-released August 2023 SU (released on 8/15/2023)

Here is what you need to do based on your environment:

If you have Aug SUv1 installed… And you… Your recommended action is…
…via manual installation without any issues (no specific action taken) You can optionally install Aug SUv2 or wait for later SUs.
…through automatic installation (Microsoft / Windows Update) without any issues (no specific action taken) Aug SUv2 will be automatically downloaded; install later SUs.
…but its Setup failed, leaving Exchange services disabled …restarted Exchange services using ServiceControl.ps1 AfterPatch (or other methods), without installing Aug SUv1 Install Aug SUv2 and await later SUs.
…but its Setup failed, leaving Exchange services disabled …restarted Exchange services using ServiceControl.ps1 AfterPatch (or other methods), and used the workaround to manually create a “Network Service” account before installing Aug SUv1 1. Uninstall Aug SUv1, then reboot.

2. Remove the created “Network Service” account (if it still exists).

3. Install Aug SUv2 and later SUs.

…and it was never used …aim to maintain Exchange server updated Install Aug SUv2 and anticipate later SUs.

You can get the updated download links in the August 2023 SU announcement blog post.
