Battlefield 2042 Open Beta enters early access tomorrow, but you can preload it now

If Halo Infinite recently got a lot of positive buzz with a series of successful multiplayer betas, fans of shooter games should now have their eyes set on the upcoming Battlefield 2042 Open Beta that will kick off tomorrow. The latest Battlefield game will be released on November 19 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, but unlike previous episodes, Battlefield 2042 will be a multiplayer-only game.

Early access for the Battlefield 2042 Open Beta will be available on October 6-7 for EA Play members and people who pre-ordered the game, but the open beta will open its doors to all players on October 8-9. Pre-loading is now available on all platforms, though be aware that the PS4/Xbox One and PS5/Xbox Series versions of the game are different and there’s no support for cross-generational play.

For Battlefield 2042, developer DICE won’t come back to the WWII setting chosen by Sledgehammer Games for the upcoming Call of Duty: Vanguard. Instead, Battlefield 2042 is set in a post-apocalyptic world where shortages of natural resources have pushed the US and Russia to go to war. The game should be a comeback to the massive battlegrounds the franchise is known for, with huge maps supporting up to 128 players on PC and next-gen consoles.

The Battlefield 2042 Open Beta will feature the classic Conquest mode on Orbital, a new map where players will have to deal with hostile weather conditions near a rocket launch site. Players will also get to experience the new Specialist system with 4 different Specialists offering one unique Specialty and Trait.

The Battlefield franchise pretty much disappeared from the radar following the release of Battlefield V in 2018, a WW2-themed episode that didn’t generate the same amount of interest as its 2016 precursor Battlefield 1. There should be some serious competition with Halo Infinite and Call of Duty: Vanguard this holiday season, but this upcoming Battlefield 2042 open beta should be a good opportunity to see if DICE’s game could be a serious contender for the best shooter of 2021.

If you have pre-ordered the game or have an EA Play subscription, you can pre-load the Battlefield 2042 Open Beta on your Xbox console using the links below and start playing tomorrow, October 6. Early access will be available at 07:00 UTC on all platforms, and general access to the beta will begin on October 8 at 07:00 UTC.
