Xbox 360 still number one gaming console worldwide, as of Jan 2012

The Xbox 360 is starting off the new year with a bang. As of January of this year, Microsoft’s popular Xbox 360 console is still the number one gaming console worldwide, beating out Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii.

“Last week, Xbox 360 was revealed as the number-one selling console worldwide in 2011, according to publicly disclosed financial data from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Historically, after several years in a console’s lifecycle, demand softens, but Xbox 360 continues to defy that convention,” the company stated in an official blog post.

The Xbox 360 has continued to grow in market share due to new technologies or as the company puts it, “re-imagining entertainment.” Thanks to the Kinect for Xbox, a new Xbox dashboard, and new entertainment content, the Xbox 360 has remained the number one console at its age, unlike other consoles whose popularity died with age.

Here are some stats:

  • The Xbox 360 has sold more than 270,000 units in January alone.
  • The Xbox 360 has been the top selling console in the United States for 13 straight months.
  • The console holds a 49% share of current generation console sales.
  • Total retail spending on the Xbox 360 platform, which includes hardware, software, and accessories, reached $301 million dollars.
  • Of the top ten games for the month of January, the Xbox 360 was in the top five. Titles included: “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” “Battlefield 3,” “NBA 2K12” and “Just Dance 3.”

So whats next for the platform? We are expecting new games, such as Halo and Fable, and more entertainment partners will be added to Xbox Live. The company plans on releasing new ways to interact with popular tv shows with new experiences such as Kinect Sesame Street TV and Nat Geo TV.

There were also rumors that the next generation Xbox, dubbed Xbox 720, will have six times the power of the current Xbox 360 and will be available in the fall of 2013. But with these stats, why rush the release of Xbox 720?
