Windows Phone 8

According to new data from Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has posted its highest ever level of market share for the three months ending July 2013. Windows Phone now commands 8.2% share across the five major European markets. This solidifies the company’s mobile platform as a key player in the smartphone race.

“Android and Apple take the lion’s share of the headlines and continue to dominate smartphone sales, so it’s easy to forget that there is a third operating system emerging as a real adversary. Windows Phone, driven largely by lower priced Nokia smartphones such as the Lumia 520, now represents around one in 10 smartphone sales in Britain, France, Germany and Mexico. For the first time the platform has claimed the number two spot in a major world market, taking 11.6% of sales in Mexico,” Dominic Sunnebo stated. Hes a strategic insight director at Kantar.

The five major European markets are the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In the United States, Windows Phone owns 3.5% of the smartphone market share, with iOS owning 43.4% and Android owning 51.1%. In Mexico, Windows Phone owns a 12.5% share, overtaking iOS’s 9.2% share and being right behind Android’s 60% share.

Apple and Android continue to dominate sales globally. Android has scored a 70% market share in the major European markets along with China making it a strong force to recon with. Apple, on the other hand, continues to perform well in the USA, where it commands 43.4% of sales.
