If you didn’t already know, Windows Phone 8 devices can have a maximum of a 720p display, no higher. This is a real bummer for those who wish to see content in glorious HD 1080p. Luckily, sources familiar with Microsoft are claiming that the company are planning to release an update later this year which will enable 1080p support for the OS.

The update will arrive in the General Distribution Release (GDR3) later this year. New Windows Phone devices running this update will be able to make use of the 1080p functionality.

What may surprise you is the fact that this update isn’t part of the wide scale Blue project, as Blue for Windows Phone is set to launch sometime in the beginning of 2014.

Will you be buying a Windows Phone with a 1080p display?
