Microsoft is set to release a new version of its PC security and management service, Windows Intune, according to an official blog post. The new version of Intune will support third-party application updates as well as patching. Intune 2.0 will also add the ability to perform remote IT tasks, and read-only access to the administration console.

As ZDNet reports, Windows Intune provides IT pros with PC management and security for $11 per seat per month.

“Windows Intune brings together Windows cloud services and a Windows 7 Enterprise subscription to help businesses simplify PC management and security, all while getting the benefits of a modern operating system. At Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in July, we announced the beta for the next release of Windows Intune. Today we are excited to share with you that our next release of Windows Intune, which includes the new features and updates of the July 2011 beta, will be available on October 17 of this year!” Microsoft states in an official blog post.

Windows Intune used to be called System Center Online Desktop Manager and has evolved into a management tool and online management/security service.

Windows Intune 2.0 is set for release beginning October 17th and current subscribers will receive an upgrade alert. “Two weeks prior to your upgrade date, you’ll see an alert displayed in the Windows Intune administration console indicating the exact date and time when your subscription will be upgraded,” Microsoft states.
