Apple’s next tablet to be called iPad HD?

Reports are indicating that Apple’s third-generation iOS tablet will likely not be called iPad 3 as many are assuming. Instead, the new iPad is rumored to be called the iPad HD and is expected to support a display with a 2048×1536 resolution.

When you think about it, the iPhone 4 had double the resolution of the previous model. The iPhone 3GS had a 480×320 resolution while the iPhone 4 has a 960×320 resolution. The iPad 2 currently has a 1024×768 resolution and the iPad HD could have a doubled resolution of 2048×1536.

Reports are also indicating that the iPad HD is simply a “pro” version of the iPad 2 “aimed at a higher end market” powered by iOS 5. “The idea behind the product is apparently that it will be a ‘pro’ device aimed at a higher end market – folks who work in video and photo production possibly – and will be introduced alongside something like an iPad version of Final Cut or Aperture. This product is specifically said to not be the iPad 3, rather a complimentary piece of the iPad 2 line. Think MacBook and MacBook Pro.”

Another report is indicating that Apple will increase the tablet’s pixel density from the current iPad 2 display’s 132 pixels per inch to between 250 and 300 pixels per inch. In this report, the rumored name of the new tablet is “iPad 2 Plus.”

The new iPhone, possibly called the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, is expected to be announced at the same time as the rumored iPad HD. The new iPhone is supposed to be thinner and lighter with a 8MP camera and a dual core processor. Reports are expecting this announcement around September of this year.

iOS 5 beta 2 was recently released to developers and features wireless syncing among other cool features.
