Apple has released the final version of iOS 5, dubbed ‘Gold Master’, for developers so they can fine-tune their apps before general availability. Apple posted the update on its developer site moments after the big announcement today during the Apple event.

Apple is expected to release iOS 5 to the general public on October 12, but developers are getting an early taste of the new operating system for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, so they can prepare their apps for compatibility.

iOS 5 is slated to have over 200 new features such as a new notification system, better Twitter integration, iCloud support, improved camera, Newsstand for reading magazines and newspapers on the home screen, location-based reminders app, over-the-air software updates, iMessages, improved Safari, improved Game Center, WiFi syncing, and more.

Thusfar, we have seen seven betas for iOS 5, with the first one being released on June 6th and last one released on the 31st of August.

Although iOS 5 is slated to have an over-the-air update ability, this Gold Master cannot be installed over-the-air. Instead, developers must use of the recent developer betas of iTunes from the past two months.
