Apple is set to release its next major update to its OSX operating system for Mac desktops and laptops, OSX Lion, later today. The new update offers several features to the operating system that were inspired by the iPad.

“We are very excited to be launching Mac OS Lion tomorrow,” said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer. OSX Lion is expected to go live on the Mac App Store on Wednesday.

At the beginning of the month, Apple released the much anticipated Mac OSX 10.7 Lion ‘Golden Master’ to developers. For those that are wondering what ‘Golden Master’ means, it is pretty much the term Apple uses to reference a final build that hopefully doesn’t have any last minute hiccups or bugs before it hits the public.

So what is new in OSX Lion? Apple has mentions on its developer page that “the eighth major release of the world’s most advanced operating system challenges the accepted way of doing things by introducing new features that change the way you use a computer. This developer preview features over 3,000 new API’s covering a range of new technologies and capabilities that you can incorporate into your apps. Start developing your apps today so they are ready when Lion ships this summer.”

Mac OSX Lion will only be available to those interested through the Mac App Store for $30 and requires a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor. Lion also requires 2GB of memory and Snow Leopard to be installed.
