Windows 10 Mobile news recap: Surface phone rumor, summer release date, and more

With Windows 10 for PCs officially available, the focus now shifts to Windows 10 Mobile. Some reports have been hinting at a September or October release date timeframe, while one of the company’s executives in South Africa hinted it’s not coming until November.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson, Windows 10 Mobile will be released this summer. “We will release Windows 10 on mobile to our mobile operators this summer and our customers can expect to see Windows 10 on their mobiles later this year. We will have more to share on various editions of Windows 10 prior to its availability.”

Windows 10 Mobile is also reportedly feature complete and the software giant has also hinted at a Surface phone. Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson, in an interview, said Microsoft will release one or maybe two premium Windows 10 Mobile devices this year. He also hinted at Surface branding being used for phones:

“We are going to focus on a few great devices and the most notable being that premium consumer category. The direction we will head is the premium-branded lineup.” He later added “the goal is to have one Microsoft device family that plays this role in the Windows ecosystem.”

For those curious, here is a list of Lumia phones that will get Windows 10 Mobile first: Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930. “This is an initial list of in-market devices to receive the Windows 10 update. It is our ambition to bring Windows 10 to all Lumia devices running Lumia Denim software, noting that some features will vary, based on the hardware specifications,” a Microsoft spokesperson explained.

Stay tuned for another exciting week of Windows 10 news!
