Microsoft recently rolled out the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 devices on October 22nd and the folks over at IFIXIT have already attempted to break down the hardware and give it a reparability score.
\
Just like the first generation Surface Pro, the new Surface Pro 2 scored a 1 out of 10 in terms of repairability. IFIXIT also published photos and a guide showcasing how one could tear apart the device.
\
Here are a few tidbits from IFIXIT’s findings. The battery is not soldered to the motherboard, therefore if you feel like getting dirty and undergoing a difficult task of replacing the battery, you can do so without soldering.
\
“The delicate and arduous opening procedure leaves no room for mistakes: one slip-up, and you’ll likely shear one of the four ribbon cables in the edge of the display,” IFIXIT reports.
\
The Surface Pro 2 also contains over 90 screws inside the device with nearly 89 mechanical fasteners. There is also a ton of adhesive holding everything in place. The display consists of fused glass panel and LCD and is reportedly “extremely difficult” to remove and replace. So don’t damage it!
