While Skype waits for the acquisition with Microsoft to be approved, the company is keeping busy with some of it’s own work. On Sunday, Skype announced that it had acquired Groupme, a mobile messaging company that was founded in 2010. As Skype hasn’t announced the official financial details of the deal, AllThingsDigital claims that Skype paid $85 Million to acquire the company.

The CEO of Skype Tony Bates said in the press release announcing the deal “The GroupMe team has created an incredibly sticky group messaging experience that works across mobile devices and platforms, making this a perfect addition to the voice, video and text products in the Skype family.”

Groupme is a group text messaging service, it allows you to send text messages to groups, hold conference calls and even share photo’s with friends. The service is free and is available for Windows Phone 7, Android, iPhone and Blackberry. It also works with any phone that has text messaging capabilities.

Skype is still in the middle of being acquired by Microsoft. in May, the company announced that it would be brought by Microsoft for $8.5 Billion. While European countries have still not decided on the deal, the US Government gave the deal a go ahead earlier this summer.
