It took some time to happen, but the Bedrock version of Minecraft is finally coming to Sony’s PlayStation 4 consoles. Starting tomorrow, December 10, PS4 players will finally get the same version of the game that’s available on all other platforms, complete with the Minecraft marketplace and crossplay support.
“All that glorious, unified code means that you’ll be playing the same game as your pals on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, and mobile! So, yes – that means you get cross-play between those different consoles once you’re running the most recent update,” the team at Mojang explained. This new Bedrock version of Minecraft is a free update, and starting tomorrow it should install automatically the next time you launch the game on your PlayStation 4.
Interestingly, Minecraft will become tomorrow the first Xbox Live-enabled game on PlayStation 4, as the crossplay feature requires a free Microsoft account on all platforms. Sony used to defend its refusal to open up cross-network play by the necessity to protect younger gamers, but pressure from gamers pretty much forced the Japanese company to open the gates. The juggernaut Fortnite paved the way for other games like the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to follow, and Sony now allows all game developers to implement crossplay in their PS4 games.
