According to a new survey from security company Avast, most Windows users in the United Stated know about Windows 8 but very little have immediate plans to upgrade to Microsoft’s newest operating system. On top of that, one-third of current Windows users who are planning on purchasing a new computer are planning on jumping ship to Apple, rather than buying a Windows 8 PC.

Avast conducted this survey on October 25th, the day before Windows 8 was officially launched. Avast surveyed 1.6 million users of the company’s anti-virus products and got over 350,000 responses and 135,329 of the respondents were from the United States. 65% of the US users were running Windows 7 while 22% of the users were still on Windows XP. 8% of users were also running Windows Vista. “Six of 10 respondents were aware of Windows 8, indicating Microsoft did a good job of marketing the product in the months leading up to the Windows 8 launch, says Jonathan Penn, Avast’s director of strategy. But only 9% of U.S. respondents said they would accelerate a decision to buy a new computer just to have Windows 8, while more than 70% said they planned to stick with what they have,” the report stated. Windows 8 sold over 4 million upgrade licenses in just a few days of its launch but the company has yet to reveal figures on how well Windows 8 has been so far. The survey also found out that 16% of respondents were planning on purchasing a new PC and only 68% wanted to get a new Windows 8 PC, while 30% wanted an iPad and 12% wanted to jump ship to an Apple computer.
