Acer and Lenovo to release Windows 8 tablets in 2012

New information has been released stating that major computer manufacturers, Lenovo and Acer, are planning to release new Windows 8 tablets on Intel’s Clover Trail Platform in 2012.

Two more names have been added to the list of computer companies planning on making Windows 8 Tablets, but which ones? According to Digitimes Systems, Acer and Lenovo are planning to produce tablets “based on Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Intel’s Clover Trail platform.” The tablets are expected to be released “in the third quarter of 2012, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.”

Intel’s “Clover Trail Platform” is its next generation of mobile Atom processors. According to Sawf News, PC manufacturers are “optimistic about Intel’s Clover Trail – W processors as the enterprise market is likely to see a lot of value in tablets that can run Microsoft applications that their users are already familiar with.” Back in CES 2011, we were shown Windows 8 (when it was first previewed) running on a System Chip (SoC,) which “puts the CPU and GPU on the same silicon chip.” Though it may be small, it packs a punch and “features improvements in graphics capabilities including Blu-ray 2.0 support, a dedicated media engine for full 1080p playback and additional digital display options including HDMI output and DisplayPort.” Intel plans on also releasing this “new” technology in Q3 of 2012, and is just about to release its “Medfield” line of SoC processors to compete with ARM.
