Microsoft announced the new preview of the next generation Azure VMware Solution that makes it easy for customers to move VMware-based workloads from existing data centers into Azure.

The new Azure VMware Solution is built from a bare-metal, hyper-converged Azure infrastructure host and the private clouds contain vSphere clusters, built from dedicated bare-metal Azure infrastructure. Customers can scale private cloud clusters from 3 to 16 hosts, with the capability to have multiple clusters in a single private cloud. All private clouds are provisioned using VMware’s vCenter Server, VSAN, vSphere, and NSX-T.
The Azure VMware Solution preview will be initially available in the US East and West Europe Azure regions and it is expected to be globally available in the second half of 2020.
The new Azure VMware Solution gives customers the ability to use the same VMware foundation in Azure as they use in their private data centers. It provides a consistent operating model that can increase business agility and resiliency, reduces costs, and enable a native developer experience for all types of applications,” said Sanjay Poonen, Chief Operating Officer at VMware.
According to Microsoft, with new Azure VMware Solution, customers will be able to:
- Provision a full VMware Cloud Foundation environment on Azure and easily scale your infrastructure needs as requirements change
- Maintain operational consistency with the use of familiar VMware technologies including VMWare vSphere, HCX, NSX-T, and vSAN
- Add VMware HCX Enterprise to further simplify bulk live migrations
- Use HCX to move legacy VMware systems to newer vSphere versions.
