Microsoft's Surface Ethernet Adaptor CAN be made to work with Surface RT and Surface 2

Just a couple of days ago, I wrote about the Surface Ethernet Adaptor which can be used to add wired networking to Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. There was a little confusion — thanks to different product pages on the Microsoft site stating different device compatibility details — but it was later clarified that Surface RT and Surface 2 owners were out of luck.

Or at least that was the news from Microsoft. It may well be the case that the RT models of the Surface do not support the Surface Ethernet Adaptor, but that does not mean that it cannot be used. On DigitalManBlog, Paul Deane provides details of how the adaptor can in fact be made to work, unofficially of course.

With a little investigative work, Paul discovered that the adaptor uses the Realtek chipset and Windows RT has a Realtek USB FE Family Controller driver.

Paul provides full details of how to get the adaptor up and running, but the process boils down to manually selecting a pre-installed driver. Try it for yourself and let us know how you get on.
