Microsoft to retire OneDrive sync client on older macOS versions in September – onmsft.com

Microsoft is getting ready to retire its OneDrive sync client on older versions of macOS. The company has detailed in a blog post that the app will reach end of support on both macOS Sierra 10.12 and High Sierra 10.13 on September 10, 2021.

According to Microsoft, this change is applicable to both personal and business accounts. “The OneDrive team is committed to bringing you the best, most secure experience possible across your devices. Starting September 10, 2021, we are ending support for the OneDrive sync app on macOS Sierra 10.12 and macOS High Sierra 10.13 and focusing our resources on new technologies and supported operating systems,” the OneDrive Team explained yesterday.

The Redmond giant noted that the OneDrive sync client will only support the three most recent versions of the OS, and the list includes macOS Mojave 10.14, Catalina 10.15, as well as Big Sur 11. While the apps won’t completely stop working on the unsupported versions of macOS after that date, but Microsoft says that it will no longer receive security updates and bug fixes. Moreover, the OneDrive sync client will also fail to install on unsupported machines.

It certainly isn’t surprising that Microsoft is retiring the OneDrive sync client, given that both macOS Sierra and High Sierra reached their end of life back in 2019 and 2020, respectively. For now, macOS Mojave users will be able to use the OneDrive sync app, and there is no word on when it will be retired, too. That said, the software giant urges users to update their machines to macOS Big Sur 11.0 or newer.
