Microsoft announced this morning that it will open its first datacenter region in Malaysia as part of an ambitious plan to advance the country’s economy. The new datacenter region in the Greater Kuala Lumpu will provide local customers access Azure, Microsoft 365, and Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, with the ability for customers to store data in-country.
This planned Malaysia datacenter region will support Microsoft’s global sustainability goals, with the company aiming to use 100% renenable energy by 2025. Moreover, Microsoft intends to support Malaysia’s digital transformation by working with the government, startups and enterprises, in addition to plan to help 1 million Malaysians to learn digital skills by the end of 2023.
Microsoft has been operating in Malaysia for 28 years, where it has 200 employees and 2,000 partners in the country. According to an IDC study (sponsored by Microsoft), the company’s latest investments in Malaysia could generate up to $4.6 billion in new revenues and 19,000 new jobs in the country over the next four years.
