In an announcement today by Apple’s Senior VP of iOS software, Apple’s next major update to its mobile operating system for its iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch line will be available for download starting Wednesday, October 12th. This free update will be accessible via iTunes.
iOS 5 is slated to have over 200 new features such as a new notification system, better Twitter integration, iCloud support, improved camera, Newsstand for reading magazines and newspapers on the home screen, location-based reminders app, over-the-air software updates, iMessages, improved Safari, improved Game Center, WiFi syncing, and more.
iOS 5 will also feature a PC-free updating, which means wireless software updating. Someone go tell Microsoft about this feature so they can catch on.
Apple originally unveiled iOS 5 back in June of this year at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Today marks the first time we get a direct answer as to when the release date will be. Apple originally stated that iOS 5 would hit sometime this fall, but now we know it will happen on the 12th of October.
