144,739 total apps in the Windows Store and the top Windows 8.1 apps as of Jan 19th

As of January 19th, there are 144,739 apps in the Windows Store, an increase of 776 apps in just one week. A bit of a slow week for new apps compared to previous weeks. The Windows Store is close to reaching the 150,000 app milestone, which is no surprise since over a thousand apps are being added to the Store on average, every week.

Let’s dive in and take a look at the most popular Windows 8.1 and Windows RT apps available in the Windows Store. We will go over some stats for the Windows Store, including the top five paid apps and top five free apps. This is yet another post in our feature called “Windows Store Sunday” where we highlight what’s going on with the Windows Store.

This past week, we highlighted Tarzan Unleashed, a cool new endless runner game for Windows 8.1. You can run through the untamed African jungles with the original superhero, Tarzan of the Apes, and swing through the treetops and over beautiful, but treacherous waterfalls!

Tweetium, a fantastic Twitter app for Windows 8.1, was bumped to version 1.4 and continues to be fine tuned with bug fixes and app enhancements. For example, this new update now adds a “last seen” affordance so show you were you last left off. The update also adds various improvements and bug fixes.

AppFeds is a new online tool, which launched this week, that aims to provide statistics, app data, and app discovery for the Windows Store. With AppFeds, you can track the Windows Store and see which apps are trending, as well as see the stats of your published app. You can even review and rate apps directly via the AppFeds website. This is a fantastic resource worth checking out.

There are plenty of apps in the Windows Store for entertainment and fun, but how about an app to teach you about Microsoft’s technologies? Check out Posterpedia for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT – a free app created by a member of Microsoft’s Cloud and Server team.

As part of the January 2014 Patch Tuesday this past week, Microsoft has rolled out KB2913270 for both Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1. This update package includes performance and reliability improvements for the Windows Store, making your app browsing experience just a tad bit better.

Microsoft also rolled out two updates to its Windows 8.1 apps this past week – Skype and Bing Translator. The Skype app for Windows 8.1 simply received general bug fixes while the Bing Translator app received speech input functionality.

And now, lets take a look at the top five free apps in the United States based on popularity:

  • Facebook
  • Hangman Pro
  • Google Search
  • Netflix
  • 3rd Floor Word Search

Here are the top five paid apps currently in the Windows Store:

  • Halo Spartan Assault
  • Asphalt 8 Airborne
  • Fruit Ninja
  • Dictionary 8
  • 4 Elements II Special Edition

Stay tuned for next week’s Windows Store highlight!
