Microsoft is set to discontinue its Tag service, which is the company’s barcode technology somewhat similar to QR codes. However, even though the service is being discontinued on Microsoft’s end, the company has licensed out the technology to Scanbuy and the technology will be integrated into Scanbuy’s ScanLife platform.
“This August 19, 2013 notice is to inform our Microsoft Tag customers that the Microsoft Tag service will terminate in two years, on August 19th, 2015. Through August 19, 2015, you will be able to continue to log into your existing Microsoft Tag service account, use existing Microsoft Tag codes, generate new Microsoft Tags, and run reports as usual,” Microsoft stated.
Microsoft has selected Scanbuy to continue supporting the technology. “Scanbuy has been selected to support Microsoft Tag Technology on the ScanLife platform beginning no later than September 18th, 2013, and to offer transition and migration services to Microsoft Tag customers who choose to migrate to the ScanLife platform. This transition path will help you to continue running your campaigns using Microsoft Tags on the ScanLife platform,” Microsoft stated.
For those unaware, Microsoft Tag never really caught on and failed to get adopted, unlike QR codes. Scanbuy is the largest provider for QR codes and runs a platform called ScanLife, which is a cloud-based engagement platform for creating personalized and tailored experiences for consumers to digitally engage with their brands via smartphones.
