Microsoft is fixing one of Windows 10’s biggest problems with external monitors. The company noted in a recent blog post that it’s now testing a tweak for the problem where desktop application windows in multi-monitor setups might end up rearranging every time you return to your computer from sleep.
Microsoft says the fix works through tweaking the Rapid Hot Plug Detect (Rapid HPD) technology in Windows 10. “This behavior impacts DisplayPort multi-monitor setups which results in unwanted desktop rearrangements. We have worked towards mitigating desktop rearrangements when Rapid HPD occurs,” said Michelle Xiong, a Program Manager on Microsoft’s Graphics Team.
Currently, this fix is only available in the Windows Insider program with build 21287 or above, the feature which fixes the problem will be turned on by default. It’s not limited to monitor manufacturer, hardware specs, connector type, or cable brand. Of course, you need to have at least two monitors for it to work on desktops and 1 external monitor on laptops with a built-in screen.
