Microsoft Research is looking into a 3D, multi-projectional web browser

Microsoft Research is known for some rather wild and cutting-edge products. Much of what is created in the Labs will never see the light of market and, if it does, it could be a long way off. But some of those experiments end up becoming part of a greater plan in the future. There is no way of knowing which direction the latest announcement will end up heading in, but it certainly is one that should get some interest.

“A 3D web browser that will allow web pages the ability to display content across multiple surfaces in a room”, the Research team announces. It rings familiar, because we saw something like this a while back, which the company called IllumiRoom.

The idea behind this is that the browser will project an image onto a surface, acting somewhat like a second screen. “If you are watching a car race on your TV, the current driver standings can be shown on the side next to your TV”, the company explains.

The project is currently known as SurroundWeb, but no exact details are given. As previously stated, there really is no way of knowing if we will ever see it in action, and no demonstration video was released.
